What is kNERD?
kNERD is a tool for musicians, engineers, producers, venues etc, to see how they are all connected. Our goal is to allow artists to promote their music, including side projects and legacy bands that fans may not be aware of, and see where their fans are, which songs they like best and other fan data. Fans get to connect with there favorite artists by reviewing anything from songs, albums and bands to even eras of music. Anyone may create playlists to listen to and share.
Who is kNERD for?
kNERD is for artists, fans, venues, labels, and anyone else in the music business or anyone interested in joining the music business or researching music.
-Artists:
See where you fans are. See what cities you should tour in first. Do you have more fans in Brooklyn or Manhattan, Detroit or Ann Arbor? kNERD will tell you. Want to gain fans in a specific city? kNERD will help you find the perfect band and venue to book within that city. Read reviews of your music written by the people that matter: your fans and peers. Update your fans with your new music releases and show dates in real time.
-Fans:
Get constant updates from the musicians themselves. Learn about new side projects and past projects. Review anything the artist uploads and have your reviews rated by other members. Create, save and share playlists. Learn about what goes into each recording and how different producers, engineers, and musicians work together.
-Everyone
else in the music industry: If you are an audio engineer, music producer, album layout artists or studio musician that has any album credits, through kNERD a fan may click on your name and have a playlist created with everything you've ever been part of! You may save a playlist like this and share it on your other social networking sites.
Why are there only 'indie' artists on kNERD? Where's Lady Gaga?
kNERD is a free tool for artists/labels/producers/etc to connect with fans. kNERD does not license music from any label. If you upload music to kNERD, you are simply giving us rights to stream music to our members and your fans. If you are a record label, we would love for all your artists to register to kNERD so their fans can learn about all their side projects! If you are an audio engineer or producer, we would love to see you get more business because fans and artists can now see what you bring to each album. kNERD will not pay licensing fees. Do not upload any music that you do not own. Do not upload any music that you do not want streamed. HOWEVER... We would love if larger artists used kNERD. But we didn't build it for them in mind.
Will kNERD ever pay artists like ad supported streaming services?
Maybe. Hopefully! Right now we are focused on trying to create a place that artists and fans actually enjoy.
Why is kNERD in beta testing and how long will the beta last?
We come from musical backgrounds and have focused on the features of kNERD that would benefit the artists and fans the most. We are testing not only to work out the possible bugs in these features, but to redevelopment them based on your comments and feedback. We will be adding a few game changing features very soon, but we wanted to focus on the current features first. How long will beta testing last? Until we have created a useful, fun and stable community.
Is this all there is?
We are currently developing more features! If we kept holding back launching the site until each feature was complete, we'd never launch...
Who built kNERD and why did he do it?
Rob Shelby (that's me) came up with the kNERD concept many years ago. I started kNERD from scratch around September of 2009. Click on my name to read more about me and my music/geek background.
Ben Arwin stepped in to take over development to allow me to focus on making sure kNERD will always be helping artists and fans.
Michiko Swiggs gave kNERD it's user interface and logo. She also tweaked and fixed a lot of the original design.
Our board of advisors are Dave Feeny and Drew Bennett. Many people don't know this, but Drew was a drummer in Violent Appathy!!!
Will kNERD ever start charging?
We are going to do our best never to charge artists. Right now, there are no plans for "platinum" memberships for artists or fans. We are musicians, producers, engineers, song writers, and dedicated fans. We know that artists should only be worried about 1 thing: making the best music possible. We know fans are already paying outrageous ticket fees. We want to be part of the solution, not just another music website.
Will there ever be audio ads?
Yes.
How is kNERD pronounced and why is kNERD called kNERD?
The k is silent. It is pronounced "nerd". Rob Shelby bought this domain name almost a decade ago. Since then he used it to let musicians house their websites and mp3s for free.
For some reason, I want to delete my account. Where do I do that?
You may delete your account by clicking here. Please keep in mind that kNERD does save enough data to keep connections in place.
I have a suggestion, feedback, question or I found a bug!
